Messed Around and Made Some KIWANO MELON Juice

Kiwano Melon Juice - 1

I happened to be at the market the other day, and saw this prickly fruit and decided to give it a try.

I’d never seen what it looked like inside and was curious because usually, something that looks this aggressive is usually pretty tasty.

I cracked it open and was lowkey very impressed.

This is a beautiful fruit. Now I have to look it up and see what it is exactly.

THe Kiwano Melon, also Cucumis metuliferus, horned melon or kiwano, also African horned cucumber or melon, jelly melon, hedged gourd, melano, in the southeastern United States, blowfish fruit, is an annual vine in the cucumber and melon family, Cucurbitaceae.

The fruit is native to southern and central Africa. The fruit is oval and has a hard orange skin with little horns. The fruit contains a green jelly with edible seeds. The taste of the kiwano is a combination of banana, melon, cucumber and lime.

You can eat it all kinds of ways, and I’ll let you do your googles and figure it out, but I thought it best to mess around and make a libation out of it.

Fun fact, when you scoop it out, it comes out mad clean and leaves this awesome shell. Side note, this may be something to use at a later date to impress a shorty. I’m thinking of making some sort of dessert out of it and filling up the spikey thingy. That should impress. Anyways…..

I just scooped it out and dropped some water in the blender with it.

I also added some maple syrup (because that all the sweet I had) and also cut open a couple of more lemons because I had some on deck.

Blend it for a while.

I don’t measure shit. I will add in something just because. I will pour a little beer in something if I happen to be drinking one. I’m just out’chea winging it.

I will say though, the shit I make turns out really, really good.

Then, let it settle and strain it in to a jug.

Not bad I say. Really pretty colour.

For the record, I didn’t put a lot of syrup in there … and in hindsight, next time I’m going to use some agave.

Its a really light and refreshing drink and I could see if it was a little (just a lil) sweeter, and had some vodka in it, we’d have a party!
