“It Don’t Take a Whole Day to Recognize Sunshine” : Common – The Light

“The Light” is the Grammy-nominated second single from Common‘s 2000 album Like Water for Chocolate produced by Jay Dee and features keys by James Poyser.

It samples “Open Your Eyes” as performed by Bobby Caldwell and the drums from “You’re Getting a Little too Smart” by The Detroit Emeralds.

This song is obviously about Erykah Badu, who is in the video and was Com’s girlfriend at the time. I’ve always loved this record. It borderline almost turned me into a hippy after seeing the video and listening to it time and time again. I had a chick who I was madly in love with at the time and she was very much the “Erykah Badu hippy type.” We broke up, I didnt become a hippy, but this song has always been right where it needed to be.

Plus, it has one of the best lyrics that I have ever heard. “It dont take a whole day to recognize the sunshine.” is my motto for life. Its applicable at all times. Its a nice little line to drop to a girl too. Let her know you are feeling her.

This is a weekend record. This is a start your weekend record. I’m using this song to set how I’m going to roll… Peace
