Let me rephrase that, I used to think that Russell Brand was an absolute fucking nutjob, but the more and more I hear him speak, the more I think he is more aware than just about all of us.
I used to think this cat was a total effing nutjob until I saw that interview a few months ago with the guy from Newsnight. Now I agree with about 90% of what the cat says. My only issue is that there is a lot Kanye in him where people find it difficult to hear what he is saying, even though he’s probably right, because he is yelling at us all the time and not talking to us.
The most interesting thing, to me, about Russell Brand is that the guy used to be a flat out druggie. Known back in the day for his heroin addiction and alcoholism, having been arrested 12 times, and all kinds of shenanigans associated with that, its incredible the turnaround that he has had from that point in his life.
Obviously, the guy is still a bit of a nut job (the passionate about something kind) but Brand cites his practice of Transcendental Meditation as a significant factor in his recovery from drug addiction.
What strikes me interesting, is that usually these are the guys that we don’t even pay attention to anymore. They are discarded. They are pushed to the side. They are made fun of and ridiculed. But Russell Brand is ridiculously talented at something so we pay attention (to his talent that is). And that in turn makes us pay attention to what he says, some times. Its good, in this case at least, that we do listen to him because I think this guy has something to say.
Maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe its because I find myself lost these days and I’m on a journey trying to find where I am, but I’m listening to his guy.
* I love the transcendental meditation thing. I’m going to look into it more, because land knows that I could use some of this centering that Russy has.
