If you are reading this post, you are probably familiar with me and how I get down and you probably know that I have a couple of things that I am really passionate about… one of the things is cooking, one of those things is New Orleans, and one of those things is enterprising mail order items. I was sent a tweet from a buddy of mine that told me about something that could handle all three of those things in one.
My longstanding love affair with New Orleans is well documented, so when I saw the video above a couple of weeks ago, I remembered just how much I was a fan of Mr. john best.
The interesting thing is that over this Christmas break from work I happened to have watched a mini Treme marathon on-demand and I cooked some Holiday Gumbo for myself, so saying that, this box alert is right on time for me.
John Besh, if you aren’t familiar with him, is a chef and a native son dedicated to the culinary riches of southern Louisiana. In his restaurants, entrepreneurial pursuits, and public activities, he preserves and promotes ingredients, techniques, and heritage one mouth-watering dish at a time.
He’s in my personal Chef Mount Rushmore with Anthony Bourdain, Tom Colicchio and Eric Ripert. Its not that I don’t like other chefs and there are a ton of good guys out there (maybe even better chefs), but those four are my guys and if I had to have one meal and then it was death to me, I would ask that they all get together and make me one of those 10 course meals of a lifetime before I turned the lights out.
Anyways, one of my other favorite things in life, is having quality stuff that I can order online and have delivered to my door. As you know I’m heavy on CSA deliveries and I have some buddies that run a clothing company and they have a monthly box of clothes that is deliverable (and they are K-I-L-L-I-N-G it) so this is one of the new waves of commerce.
Its actually interesting that other chefs with a name haven’t tried this yet. There are a ton of mail order services for fresh and healthy meals but we haven’t seen one that isn’t a startup of some kind and I’m pretty interested to see how this works out for Besh. From the website www.beshbox.com, the boxes are describes as this:
Each Besh Box is filled with hand-picked items to inspire, spark creativity and get you cooking!
Each month’s Besh Box will be different but you can expect to receive items that support the exciting monthly themes such as:
– Gourmet cooking tools that I love
– Recipes that can be shared and expanded upon throughout the years
– Specialty ingredients that include small batch and local, artisan ingredients whenever possible
– Household kitchen items that I have discovered and want to share with you
– Fun toys and themed items that help bring the season or event to life
– Music playlists to inspire during prep, cooking, entertaining (or just dancing when no one is around!)
– Cocktail pairings that complete the dish
– An overview of a charitable organization that I will be supporting through your support of Besh Box
and more surprises…
As you can see, the box is described very well, but it doesn’t tell me whats in the box! I have looked around the internets a little bit and haven’t been able to find an open box yet so we can see the contents, but I probably just need to dig a little bit deeper (or order one and be patient) …. well well well, so I went to youtube and found something:
So, after seeing the video, we can see that we don’t get a ‘complete meal’ in the box (at least from this example) but we get some utensils and items that follow a monthly theme and can be used to follow along with the recipes provided in the box. Interesting.
Besh Box subscriptions are available for $55 monthly, and in 3-month ($160), 6-month ($330) and 12-month ($660) plans
